School Curriculum

NATYA Dance Academy was founded to impart training in the ancient classical dance form, Bharatha Natyam from India. The studios located in Bethany (Portland) and Hillsboro provide training to children ages 4 to adults as old as 40 years from beginner to advanced classes in group classes and private setting.

Fee: One time registration fee includes two books on Indian dance. Monthly fee paid at first class of the month and discount for additional family member (mother or sibling learning)

Each student is advanced to next level based on grasp of technique in each class and not on age of the student or performance of others in that group. Private lessons as per teacher and student schedule provided as required. Skype classes are also ongoing. Other than the classes below, rehearsals for special performances are also provided. All classes are taught by Guru Jayanthi Raman and substitute classes by Ramya Raman.

Beginners: Two one hour classes per week

Intermediate Junior: Two one hour classes per week

Intermediate Senior: Two one hour classes per week

Senior: One one-hour classes per week, two hours is needed for adavu practice.

Arangetram training: One on one training and some group lessons

Post-Arangetram training:  One on one training and some group lessons based on items taught

Theory classes: Ongoing with dance classes. Shlokams, hasta mudras, mythology are taught from Abhinaya Darpana and Natya Sastra.

Performances Basic: Small community performances of bhajans/shlokams, etc.

Performances Senior: More advanced performance items, including some contemporary items.

JRDC Company performers: Performances and touring opportunities in major dance productions with Jayanthi Raman Dance Company.

Nattuvangam (post-arangetram): Training for post-Arangetram students in art of Nattuvangam, conducting the orchestra.

Choreography (post arangetram): Training and guidance for choreography for small to more complex piece.

Teaching (post-Arangetram): Training for post-Arangetram students for teaching classes.
